Among these was DREAMY GENT, who landed a maiden hurdle at Punchestown last month and was gaining compensation for being brought down there when vying for the second-last in a conditions hurdle last week. The winner was left in front after the fifth-last and soon found himself in a commanding lead. He wasn’t doing much in front from the second-last but found that bit more when Irish Invader threatened to move on terms in the closing stages. Trainer Jessica Harrington felt that her charge would have been better served by getting a lead until much later in the race, and she will aim the useful five-year-old at another novice event. Irish Invader was hard at work from the third-last, but he stuck to his task well under pressure and at one stage looked as though he might reel in the leader. The 117-rated gelding would be a more than deserving winner of a maiden and shouldn’t have to wait much longerfor his first success over timber. He may prefer a longer trip. Field Commander was keeping on steadily from the third-last without looking a threat to the front pair. A 2m maiden winner at Sligo, he shaped as though he would improve when steppedup to a longer trip. The Kerry National winner Bothar Na wasn’t disgraced, but he doesn’t seem to be anywhere near as effective over hurdles as he is over fences. Salford City, who won a maiden at Down Royal last week, was in trouble a longway from home and is capable of much better. Enfield Chase, another recent maiden winner, was a spent force once headed after the fifth-last. He would probably have preferred quicker ground but was struggling from some way out. |

TOTE WIN £3.60 PL £1.90, £1.30, £3.30; Ex £18.30; CSF £11.08 Six previous bumper winners in the line-up here with victory going to BALLYCULLEN BOY in a tight finish. The winner had racked up four previous seconds and with a rating of 111 over jumps he had solid claims. He bravely knuckled down well under a strong drive to get the better of the well-backed favourite on the run-in. His trainer will send him chasing soon and while he seemed to handle this perfectly good jumping ground, his trainer suggested afterwards he doesn't appreciate it any quicker. Irish Invader was a fairly consistent sort on heavy ground during the winter and he was well supported to build on several encouraging runs. He arrived to challenge approaching the bypassed penultimate flight and held a narrow lead after the last until the winner wore him down. He should be capable of winning a similar contest and just might appreciate some juice. In Debted Friends hadn't run since finishing second in a Thurles maiden hurdle over a couple of furlongs shorter in January. He looks another who should benefit from his return following a break. Knowledge Box was rated 119 coming into this following several respectable runs in better company, but he was struggling to make any impression when the tempo increased before the turn-in. Daysent Man seems to be improving with experience and a longer journey, as he showed here, but was still well-beaten. As was Oscar Honey, who raced down the outer looking a threat briefly approaching the third last until weakening. Bemo Two led for a time until almost falling at the seventh where Sketch On The Page exited, resulting in this flight been bypassed on the next circuit. Kilcrea Asla was another to race up front for a time until dropping away. Jack The Bus [stiff], Kilpedder [stone bruise], Off The Mark [ground], Jack From Curragha [lame] and Sulla [ground] didn't run. |

Showing the benefit of that first run over hurdles, the winner was always close to the pace and went to the front before the third last. He had to contend with the challenge of Tawnies from before the straight but started to edge ahead at the last and kept on well in the closing stages. Winning trainer Jessica Harrington views Tailor’s Hall as a future staying chaser and reported that he will have one more run over hurdles this season before going over fences next term. He had no problem coping with the testing ground. Tawnies held every chance from before the straight but he could do no more from the last. He briefly lost second on the run-in but then regained that position from Irish Invader. He has previously posted respectable placed efforts behind Academy Reward and Parrot Cay and only needs to make slight improvement to pick up a maiden hurdle. Irish Invader travelled well for much of the race. He looked as if he might get on terms with the front two at one stage in the straight but he could never quite reach the winner. He has already shown enough to suggest that he can pick up a maiden hurdle but he may do better over a slightly shorter trip. Sandhurst was making his racecourse debut. He could never land a telling blow but was staying on over the final half mile and should be all the better for this run. December Sun was having his first outing for 301 days and can be expected to do better with this run behind him. Lemonfield made much of the running but could do no more once headed by the winner. He ran respectably in a Leopardstown handicap last time and produced a sound effort to chase home Pontium over a longer trip here in December but was unable to match that level of form. Arctic Bear was looking to build on a solid second to Heavenly Blues on his jumping debut at Naas last month but he was well below his best here and faded out of contention before the straight. He possibly found this trip beyond him. Good Tune made a respiratory noise in running. |

Former dual bumper winner AMSTECOS got off the mark first time out over hurdles in a race that should throw up plenty of future winners. A E43,000 Derby Sale purchase, the winner was having his first outing since scoring at Perth last May and improvement is likely especially when upped in trip. After travelling well until pushed along after the second-last, he eventually got to the front on the long run to the last [actual second-last flight omitted]. Despite edging right under pressure, his class got him through on the run-in. Cheltenham plans are undecided with the ground probably going to determine whether he travels or not according to his trainer. If he is to run it would have to be soft but he's going to be better over a trip and in time make a better chaser, said Brian Hamilton. Former Thurles bumper winner Monoceros, now rated 113 [from 116] over hurdles, led before halfway and plugged on gamely from the second-last ahead of favourite Irish Invader. He was tackling this shorter trip for the first time after three attempts over longer distances and after looking a potential threat when they turned for home was unable to make any impression when switched to the inner for his challenge before the final flight. Mitchelstown was having his first outing since April last year. He travelled well throughout until failing to find more on the run to the last but the former Gowran bumper winner can hopefully build on this effort. German import Lazio, who ran well for third here first time out, failed to build on that outing but probably wants better ground to be seen at his best. Pine Valley, who won three handicaps on the Flat, was running for the third time over jumps and could well be destined for handicaps soon. |

The winner made a successful debut in a Cork bumper on good ground in October and had posted his best effort from three starts over timber when finishing second to Franklins Trail at Gowran last month. Always close to the pace, he improved into a challenging position at the second last and stuck to his task well on the run in to overhaul Judge Deed. Winning trainer Joe Crowley, who was worried whether his charge would last home on this ground, will now run him in handicap. He feels his good jumping should stand him in good stead in that sphere. Judge Deed, who was second to Arrive Sir Clive at Leopardstown last time, produced a good effort from the front and jumped well. He was strongly pressed from the turn into the straight but found plenty under pressure and looked as if he might have done enough to succeed nearing the last but he just could not fend off the winner. He won't have any trouble winning a maiden. Final Orders only just failed to defeat Shanghide in a Punchestown maiden hurdle last month and probably ran to a similar level here. He was somewhat slowly away from the third last before keeping on under pressure in the closing stages for third. He may be suited by a longer trip. Irish Invader got closer to Final Orders than when running fifth in that Punchestown contest. He looked a possible danger to the winner when looming upsides Judge Deed nearing the second last but was unable to sustain that effort. A shorter trip might be in his favour. Manoir ran to a similar level with the winner as when finishing sixth to Franklains Trail at Gowran. His previous victory came on good to firm and he may appreciate better ground. The Hoodoo Remains was staying on in the closing stages and could do better over further, while Countrycousin will need to improve to make his mark at this level. Warra Mountain could never land a blow, while Bemo Two failed to match the form of his third to Freds Benefit at Limerick and dropped away from the third last. |
