ANALYSIS: The going was officially yielding to soft, soft in places on the hurdles course although the jockeys described it as soft and dead.

This was only an ordinary maiden hurdle by Fairyhouse standards and the pace was far from exacting. CODE OF RULES raced in a decent position and led immediately after the second-last. Trainer Tom Taaffe said: "He was bought to go chasing and he will now go handicap hurdling."

Sizing America ran on well in the closing stages. He had shown good form in bumpers and this was his first run over hurdles. He looks one to bear in mind next time.

Derrykeel was running over hurdles for only the second time. He was ultra-consistent in bumpers and should be able to win a maiden hurdle.

Mercuric, beaten almost30 lengths when fifth to Finger Onthepulse on his Leopardstown debut, has clearly come on from that. He raced in a good position and would not need to improve much more to able to win a maiden hurdle.

Carrig An Uisce moved up and looked dangerous turning for home but he could find no more when the tap was turned on.

Aitmatov, a good horse on the Flat in France, charged the first hurdle and was slow at the second. He was better thereafter but took a strong hold. He weakened from the second-last but this experience will have taught him a lot. Freeport Lady was found to be lame post-race. [MC]

ANALYSIS: The ground was officially heavy here with favourite backers suffering a costly reversal when BOB HALL denied market leader Carthalawn close home. The winner, who finished fast when he was switched off the rail, is a half-brother to the useful chaser and stable companion Cane Brake and looks sure to be taking the same route in time. His trainer feels he probably wants better ground.

The runner-up had finished second on all three outings over hurdles coming here but he looked like putting that behind him when going a couple of lengths clear approaching the last until the winner denied him.

Clonmel bumper winner Aleatory began to struggle after the third last and soon had no more to offer while Code Of Rules ran respectably in his first start over jumps and should hopefully improve from this.

How Art Thou was another to run respectably in his first run over hurdles and should be open to improvement as Juniper Park weakened after racing in the leading group for a time.
