ANALYSIS: Jockeys reported the ground to be a bit of a pick and mix of good and good to firm with some easier patches on the bends. This novices' claiming hurdle did not take that much winning and CLASSIC CROCO having his first run for his new trainer and first for almost 11 months proved too good for them. He got in with a good chance on official figures and won accordingly but gave the impression he might not want too much of a battle which is worth bearing in mind for the future. Veverka, having only her second try over hurdles, was much lower rated than the winner on the Flat so this was a promising effort for the grade and there might be a bad race such as this in her. Canadian Storm had won one of these last time but is not one to trust implicitly. Roeshan did not help her cause by continually diving right at her hurdles and if keeping straight would have finished closer. Zumrah, switching back to hurdles after flopping badly over fences at the course last week, does not look as if he is in love with the game whatever it is. |

LE TISS, who had previously beaten just two horses in three previous outings over this trip, showed much improved form on his handicap debut, a performance which prompted the stewards to refer the matter to the Jockey Club. Given that he is by a French Derby runner-up out of a 12f winner, he should make a decent middle-distance handicapper next season. Habanero, another making his handicap debut after the obligatory three runs, improved for the step up in trip, as his pedigree suggested he would. Veverka set a decent standard for the rest to aim at and ran a decent race, but she looks likely to remain vulnerable to less exposed types. The top weight Resplendent King was another venturing into handicap company for the first time. He came there to have every chance but looked a non-stayer. Rabitatit's 6lb penalty for his Bath win couldn't have helped his cause, and Dry Wit looks to have been given a stiff enough mark for what she has achieved to date. Sylvester Kirk's representative reported that Mustang Ali was discovered to have mucus on his lungs after the race. |

The stiffening breeze was aiding in the home straight. Paddock inspection suggested there were no future stars and the way this field struggled home in a slow time, strung out, compounded that view. There was not a strong pace as Sahara Storm dictated matters and few landed a blow from the back with the first six finishing well clear. SHALAYA ran green when asked to pick up the front three into the final two furlongs but she got the hang of things just in time to swamp her rivals in the last strides to suggest she can improve considerably for the experience. She does not have a lot of size and scope but is likely to stay further, although a debut win does not make life easy as she does not look destined for the top table. Veverka continues to progress apace with each step up in trip and she is a likeable filly with some scope and deserves a win. Cause Celebre does not have the same physical scope but she progressed from her debut effort and should win her maiden. Sahara Storm was only shrugged off in the final furlong but she again proved vulnerable in a finish. Newcomers Damsel and Meissen hinted at better to come with this experience sure to bring them on. Damsel had to switch off the inside rail to finish widest out midtrack which cost her ground and momentum, and she can leave the bare form behind. Shady Reflection was disappointing but raced too keenly hemmed in on the rail early and she did not look happy on the lively ground. Inmom was reported to have been struck into |

The race lacked strength in depth and the fillies filled the first four places. MADAEH, who is from the same family as Elnadim, Mehthaaf and Khulood, won nicely after travelling well for much of the race and was value for more than the winning margin. She was weak in the market, but proved head and shoulders above her rivals and there is little doubt she is up to winning more races. She will surely take a step up in class after this, although her trainer reported she will have a break before her next run. A mile will also hold no fears for her. Veverka, who was beaten 20 lengths on her debut, appreciated the extra furlong, but did not get going until far too late. She already looks in need of a mile. Taminoula, midfield in the same Windsor maiden as Veverka, was quite keen in the early stages and did well to hang on for third, allbeit, well beaten. She looks like she will be better suited to nurseries. Mocca looked a leading contender on her debut third in a similar event over course and distance, but was disappointing and never looked likely to take a hand in the finish. She just does not appear to have made the expected progress between her first two runs. Ermine Grey, stepping up in trip, looked to find the ground plenty fast enough and may need further, although he now qualifies for nurseries and may do better in that sphere. Diosypros Blue showed good pace on his debut and was not given a hard time once his chance had gone. Diamond Way showed little and is clearly not very high up the pecking order among David Loder's juveniles. |
