This was notable for the field shunning the inside rail, obviously searching for less cut-up ground on the third day of the meeting. It was run at a strong pace, but, as on day one, they looked to be struggling home after racing on the round course wherethe divots were noticeably flying deep in the back straight before the ground looked better on the higher plateau in the final 4f.
YOUNG MICK, without a win at the turn of the year, fired in his tenth victory, four on the trot here, and first at this level, although it can be argued this was more of a Listed contest than a Group 3 especially with Kandidate floundering over this trip on the easier ground.
That said, Young Mick started on the all-weather rated 60 and, after his good Ebor run, went into this rated 104, which will now have to be adjusted sharply upwards again with his defeat of Listed winner Munsef with no hard-luck stories. As he easily put the race to bed into the final furlong before again looking to idle, he won more impressively than the official margin.
Connections are rightly worried about undertaking the Melbourne Cup trip, not only with 2m to run on a track that has a high war of attrition, but also because this four-year-old has been on the go for 18 months and this was his 19th race of the year. He has a Listed race option at Newmarket next Friday, but after this Group 3 that does not make much sense and, equally, talk of the Japan Cup is a shot in the dark while hopes that this rapid improver can turn into a Cup horse, albeit facing Yeats next year, looks the sensible outlook.
Munsef settled at the back before launching a strong run down the midtrack outside of the pack in the straight, but he was easily held in the final furlong, and, with his good Group-race placings this season, he gives the form a solid enough look.
Glistening could not reproduce his Ebor defeat of the winner on only 2lb worse terms over this shorter trip, but he had to make his own running and was not seen to best effect.
Foxhaven was a shade disappointing as, although he was slightly short of running room inside the last 2f, it was of his own making as he did not have the tactical pace around the home bend before plodding on.
Profit's Reality was switched to the inside rail when improving from the back, but he could not make any late inroads without being digraced on comparative ratings.
Kandidate shadowed the pace wide, and had every chance inside the final 2f until his stamina ran out on this more testingground than the all-weather win over this trip.
