Bolodenka (Soviet Star)

03/08/06 Arthur Guinness Handicap, Galway

This was a well contested handicap and it witnessed a good effort from the English raider BOLODENKA, a dual winner who had run creditably on both his starts this season.
He was always travelling strongly just off the leaders and was still going quite well early in the straight, before settling the race quickly when sent to the front inside the final furlong. He could go well if getting a run in the big 7f handicap here on Sunday.

06/08/06 Michael McNamara & Co. Builders Dublin & Galway Handicap (Premier Handicap), Galway.

Successful over 1m here on Thursday, BOLODENKA followed up here under a mandatory 5lb penalty. In what was a competitive renewal of this valuable handicap, he coped well with the drop in trip and won going away after closing into the straight and hitting the front well inside the final furlong. He is improving and although the handicapper will make it harder for him in future there may well be more to come.

The Real Thing (Traditionally)

10/08/06 Centra Good Food to Go EBF Maiden, Curragh

A successful debut by THE REAL THING, who had made good headway from halfway to challenge for the lead when she was left in front due to Slaney Time jinking left from the whip and running through the rail about a furlong and a half out. She stuck to her task when tackled by the runner-up and her long-term target is the Goffs Fillies' Five Hundred back at The Curragh in September.

30/06/06 Woodaprk & Ballysheehan Studs Stakes (Listed), Curragh – placed second

The Real Thing, winner of a six-furlong maiden here on her debut, produced a good effort. Fifth over 1f out, she stuck to her task well inside the final furlong without troubling the winner.

Russian Rosie (Traditionally)

18/08/06, Terence O’Rourke EBF Maiden Fillies Stakes (Div 1), Newbury

The first division of the juvenile fillies' maiden looked a reasonable contest and produced an easy winner in RUSSIAN ROSIE, who has progressed steadily from her debut on this track last month and was always travelling well. She drew away in good style and looks capable of going on to better things.

Ireland’s Call (Kings Theatre)

20/08/06 Alaska Distributing Handicap, Leopardstown

The vastly improved IRELAND'S CALL brought his winning sequence to five here. He has risen 31lb in the ratings since getting off the mark over 6f at Naas in June and was 10lb higher here than when scoring over this trip at the Curragh a week previously. Considering he started his career in bumpers, his transformation this season has been a revelation.
Never far off the leaders, the winner began to close before the straight and went to the front just over a furlong out from where he kept on well. A return to Leopardstown for another handicap over this trip on September 9 is on the cards.

Young Mick (Kings Theatre)

12/08/06 Michael Page International Shergar Cup Challenge (Handicap), Ascot

A strong handicap run at a good pace and yet another impressive win for the ever-improving YOUNG MICK, who now goes for the Totesport Ebor, in which he will effectively be just a pound higher than for this win despite his 7lb double penalty. Once again he travelled supremely well and put the race to bed into the final furlong, which is no mean feat for an in-form handicapper these days.
He joins the favourites for the contest even though trainer George Margarson admitted he has no idea whether the gelding will continue his progress over another two furlongs. The trainer still feels Young Mick could make up into a Cup horse, hence his Melbourne Cup entry, and if he continues his meteoric rise, he deserves his 10-1 quote for York - Hills go just 8-1against the general 10-1. As Margarson pointed out, Young Mick will travel as well as anything through the race and it will be a question of whether he stays the extra trip, because he goes into the race with a leading chance, having progressed from a 70-rated performer to getting to the three-figure mark. There was plenty of solid form behind him, although Pevensey did not get the run of the race and deserves rating up with the second at least.

28/07/06 National Bank of Dubai Cup (Heritage Handicap), Ascot.

A strong handicap, featuring several horses who ran well at the royal meeting, among them the unlucky-in-running Glistening, the clear ante-post favourite for next month's Totesport Ebor. However, the pace was far from special and appeared to pick up only gradually as they headed back from Swinley Bottom, so horses who were held up were at a distinct disadvantage.
YOUNG MICK added another chapter to an extraordinary story by winning his second major handicap of the summer and his eighth race from 16 starts in a campaign that got off the mark in an all-weather claimer way back in January, at which time he was rated 39lb lower than he was here. Always handily placed, with the leaders in his sights, he was plainly going well as they straightened for home, and when asked to go and win his race in the last 2f he soon quickened to the front. He picks up just a 4lb penalty for the Ebor, for which the sponsors cut him from 25-1 to 12-1, but that race will place a much higher premium on his stamina, which is as yet untested. The Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup are possible targets in the longer term. He has earned a crack at them, and the Australians will underestimate him at their peril.

24/06/06 Duke of Edinburgh S., (Heritage Handicap), Ascot

The rags to riches story of YOUNG MICK continued as he notched up a seventh victory of the year and by far his most important success. He started the year winning off a mark of 54 and has thrived under the masterful handling of George Margarson. His trainer had been enthusiastic when previewing the previous day that he had the gelding in the same shape as when finishing a close third to Kandidate and Rohaani in the Rosebery and the stable flagbearer didn't let down his handler's judgement. He was held up in mid division and made good progress in the final furlong to push his head in front inside the final furlong. When the heat was on he responded gamely and next stop could be the John Smith's Cup at York before a possible step up in trip in the Ebor.

24/06/06 YOUNG MICK WINS DUKE OF EDINBURGH STAKES - ROYAL ASCOT

IT is a long way from winning in banded company to scoring at Royal Ascot but that is the remarkable journey that Young Mick has made in just six months as he landed the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes on Saturday.

Giving trainer George Margarson his first success at the Royal meeting, Young Mick had won a maiden claimer on the all-weather at Wolverhampton in January in which he was rated just 54.

Racing from a rating of 89 on Saturday he was notching his seventh success of the year.

Richard Quinn settled the 28-1 winner on the heels of the leading bunch and although he lost some places on the turn for home his rider soon had him making ground again.

Striking the front over a furlong out, Young Mick just had enough in reserve to hold off the strong late run of favourite Glistening by a head with Palomar a half-length back in third.

Young Mick had finished fourth in a hot handicap at Newmarket on his penultimate run and Margarson said: "I'll be honest the form lines were all there - it was a very, very good run at Newmarket.

"The winner of that was second in the Wolferton yesterday and I was hovering between the two races but he was going to be six pounds out of the handicap so we came here.

"He's used to big fields and getting knocked all over the place at places like Lingfield, Wolverhampton and Kempton so you knew the hustle bustle was going to be on his side. It's not bad from banded to Royal Ascot in six months is it?

"He worked well with Tarandot and Polar Jem as a three-year-old so I knew he had an engine, he was just underachieving on the track. My horses were all wrong last year, this year he is my 11th winner."

Margarson will continue to test the four-year-old in the best handicaps and added: "He's in the Magnet Cup and I don't think the drop down in trip will be a problem but my main aim as I've said all along is the Ebor - I'm adamant he will end up getting two miles."

There was some bad news for Quinn after the race however as the rider received a total of six days’ worth of bans (July 5-10). He was given one day for careless riding and another five for using his whip with excessive frequency.

TWO IN TWO DAYS FOR TRADITIONALLY - 11/06/06

Ballylinch Stud’s Gr.1 Oaklawn Handicap winner Traditionally sired his second winner in two days when The Real Thing won a dramatic race for the opening maiden at the Curragh last night. Slaney Time ran through the rails and threw his jockey in the closing stages as the Con Collins-trained filly came to win her race on the outside of the leaders.

The Real Thing was only the third GB or Irish runner for Traditionally, who has a first crop of 59 and whose daughter Real Tradition won in Italy on Friday.

This was a winning debut for The Real Thing (Traditionally), who looks destined for a step up in class. She took over in front with over a furlong to run and kept on well to score from Regional Counsel (Medicean). She is the second foal of the twice placed Mad Madam Mym (Hernando) whose dam, Last Spin (Unfuwain), is a placed full-sister to the Gr.3 Chester Vase hero Gulland. The third dam, Spin (High Top), also bred the Listed Cheshire Oaks heroine Salchow, dam of another Cheshire Oaks winner, Shadow Dancing.

FAST TRADITION IS FIRST FOR TRADITIONALLY

Ballylinch Stud’s beautifully-bred Gr.1 winner Traditionally has joined the ranks of successful first season sires after the victory of his daughter Fast Tradition in Italy yesterday.

The son of Mr Prospector and the unbeaten Champion Personal Ensign has only had a couple of runners in GB and Ireland to date, but his first southern hemisphere crop includes the Stakes-winning New Zealand-bred Chant, who was narrowly beaten in a Gr.1 at Ellerslie in March.

She is the first of three foals produced by Tafferel (Mr Prospector), a lightly-raced daughter of the French and US Gr.3 winner Taffeta and Tulle (Nureyev) who produced several foals in the USA before being exported to Japan.

07/03/06 EUROPEAN GR.1 WINNERS OFF THE MARK

WHIPPER

Gr.1 Prix Morny, Prix Jacques le Marois and Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Whipper (Miesque’s Son), who is standing his first season at Ballylinch Stud, has had his first three mares successfully scanned in foal.

These are Trust In Love, a Listed-placed daughter of Exit To Nowhere and the dam of Listed-placed two year-old winner Inthemoodforlove (Anabaa); Hadji Bey, a daughter of Darshaan out of the Gr.1 winner Pharaoh’s Delight, and Jallassine (College Chapel), dam of Campbeltown who was Listed-placed three times as a two-year-old in 2005.

Whipper is to cover an outstanding first book of mares, including Gr.1 winners Choc Ice and Gravieres, and Gr.3 winners Aminata, Lidanna and Wild Bluebell. He will also cover the dams of Gr.2 winners Dominica and Martillo, plus Zelda who has produced multiple Group winners in Zipping, Zelding and Nipping. Also due to visit Whipper in 2006 are the dams of the 2005 Gr.2 winning two-year-olds Always Hopeful and New Girlfriend.

Whipper’s fee for 2006 is €12,000.

FIRST FOAL BY GUINEAS HERO DUKE

Ballylinch Stud have welcomed the first reported foal by the 2004 Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Bachelor Duke.

The bay colt, who arrived on Thursday, is the first foal of the Scandinavian Champion Kimola (King’s Theatre), winner of the Listed Coolmore Matchmaker Stakes and Scandinavia Cup, as well as the Norwegian and Swedish Oaks. Described as "very nice, very correct and standing on good limbs" by John O’Connor, the foal is "an excellent advertisement for both sire and dam."

Bachelor Duke, an Airlie Stud-bred son of Miswaki from the Lisadell family, was a €125,000 Goffs yearling purchase, and broke his maiden in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, having already been Group-placed at two and a one length fourth in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes.

He stands at Ballylinch Stud alongside Soviet Star, Traditionally and King’s Theatre, plus new boy Whipper who has Kimola among his book for 2006.

22/01/06 First Group 1 winner in 2006 for Soviet Star - Russian Pearl wins Stewards Cup - Sha Tin

Classy New Zealand bred, Russian Pearl (Soviet Star x Velinda) netted a first Group One in Hong Kong as he edged out fellow Kiwi, Best Gift (Bahhare x Shock Attack), to win the Stewards' Cup (1600m) at Sha Tin yesterday.

Making light of two serious injuries that have kept his appearances limited to just seven starts in a season and a half, the tenacious Russian Pearl had a short head to spare over Best Gift in the first leg of the Triple Crown Series.

Russian Pearl ran fourth to Vengeance Of Rain in December's Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup when making his first start in eight months after an injury to his left-fore tendon, a setback that came not long after damage to the suspensory ligament on his right fore.

Despite these setbacks, it is testament to Russian Pearl's quality that he has still been able to run second in the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby and place third in the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup.

Jockey Gerald Mosse gradually eased Russian Pearl into the race around the bend and once the Soviet Star gelding hit the front his never-say-die attitude repelled the brave efforts of Best Gift.

The Duke (Danehill x Mer du Sud), consistent as ever, finished third.

Trained by Tony Cruz, Russian Pearl comes from the sole New Zealand crop of foals by Soviet Star. Also from that crop comes 5 times Group One winner and World Champion Miler, Starcraft (Soviet Star x Flying Floozie).

Like Starcraft, Russian Pearl was sold through the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale in 2002, fetching $37,500 to the bid of Cambridge bloodstock agent, Stuart Hale.

Initially trained in New Zealand by Bruce Marsh, Russian Pearl was amongst the upper echelon of New Zealand three-year olds, successful in the Gr.1 Levin Classic (1600m) in 2003.

'He has had those injury problems before so I just hope he pulls up well and is sound in the morning,' said Cruz.

'If that's all good, he will next go for the Hong Kong Gold Cup, the second leg of the Triple Crown at the end of next month, and then attempt the Dubai Duty Free late in March, the first leg of the Asian Mile Challenge. The race there is just short of 1800m and that would be his perfect distance.

'He's not a very big horse but he is well balanced and he has lots of class. He's like a Mini Cooper with a Porsche engine!'

Runner up, Best Gift was offered by Wenvoe Lodge through New Zealand Bloodstock’s Select Sale in 2002. The son of Bahhare is a brother to the Shane Kennedy trained, Hurrah, a Group One winner in New Zealand this season.

Third placegetter, The Duke, was a $200,000 purchase at the 2001 Premier Yearling Sale by New Zealand Bloodstock on behalf of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Haunui Farm will offer a half sister to The Duke by O’Reilly at Lot 447 of next week’s New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, which commences on Monday 30th January.

FIRST GROUP WINNER FOR TRADITIONALLY

Ballylinch Stud’s Traditionally (Mr Prospector), whose oldest Northern Hemisphere crop have just turned two, has already had significant success with his first Southern Hemisphere juveniles.

His first runner, Chant, took the Listed Fairview Ford Stakes at Waikato in New Zealand last month and on New Year’s Day she added a convincing victory in the Gr.3 Eclipse Stakes over 6f at Ellerslie. She finished strongly to take the race by a length and could now target the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes.

Chant is owned and bred by Dick Karreman, owner of New Zealand’s The Oaks Stud, which is home to Traditionally when he is on shuttle duty.

The Oaks Stud is offering a full-brother to Chant at the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale at the end of this month (Lot 237).

10/12/05

FIRST STAKES VICTORY FOR TRADITIONALLY

Ballylinch Stud’s young sire Traditionally has sired his first Stakes winner. His first runner, the two-year-old filly Chant, won the Listed Fairview Ford Stakes at Waikato in New Zealand. The filly is out of the Warning mare Chantenay, who was bought for 22,000gns by Southern Bloodstock at the 1998 Tattersalls December Sale.

Traditionally, a beautifully-bred son of Mr Prospector and the unbeaten Champion Personal Ensign, is a fullbrother to the Gr.1 winner and successful sire Miner’s Mark and a half-brother to the Gr.1 winner My Flag – herself the dam of the Champion Storm Flag Flying.

His five victories up to nine furlongs included the Gr.1 Oaklawn Handicap at Oaklawn Park in 2001.

Traditionally’s first northern hemisphere crop of 58 will be racing next season.

Starcraft retired

Champion STARCRAFT (NZ) (Soviet Song) has been retired and will stand the 2006 Northern Hemisphere season at Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket, England. After carving out an extremely successful campaign in Australia/New Zealand, the five-year-old further enhanced his top-class reputation with a pair of smashing victories in Europe this year, defeating many of the world's best milers in prestigious Group 1 races in England and France. The Luca Cumani trainee finished seventh when stretching out in distance and trying the dirt in his final career start, the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

"A most impressive physical specimen with a great swagger, blessed with explosive power," Cumani said. "A true champion miler, he will be a great asset to all Northern Hemisphere breeders...You will love Starcraft. I wish I could have trained him for longer."

A winner of five Group 1 races in four countries, Starcraft recorded convincing scores in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Fr-G1) and Queen Elizabeth II S. (Eng-G1) at Newmarket this season. A number of Australasian-bred horses have successfully ventured to the Northern Hemisphere in recent years, but Starcraft boasts the best credentials of any, becoming the first invader since Strawberry Road (Aus) 20 years ago to post multiple Group 1 victories in both hemispheres.

"We are truly delighted that we will be standing such a tough and genuine international champion miler as Starcraft with us at Cheveley Park Stud, a horse who possessed such an impressive turn of foot," Cheveley Park Stud Managing Director Chris Richardson said. "Starcraft defeated the best in both hemispheres and I am sure he will be well received and supported by European breeders."

Starcraft, who will shuttle to Arrowfield Stud in Australia during the Southern Hemisphere breeding season, will stand for £10,000 at Cheveley Park.

Starcraft wins messy QE11

STARCRAFT stayed on in fine style to claim an impressive success in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon.

Luca Cumani's charge, sent off a 7-2 chance, found a little extra at the business end to hold Godolphin's Dubawi by three-quarters of a length.

Blatant, pacemaker for Dubawi, finished a further length and a half back in third.

Christophe Lemaire settled the ex-Australian runner behind Blatant early on as the six-runner field split into two groups.

Last year's winner Rakti, Mullins Bay and Dubawi elected to go down the centre of the track, while Starcraft, Blatant and Sleeping Indian stuck to the rail.

Rakti was in front until around the three-furlong marker but Philip Robinson then started to give out the distress signals as Mullins Bay came up to challenge.

Meanwhile, Lemaire was just getting Starcraft into full flow and he was travelling supremely well as Blatant started to feel the pace.

Frankie Dettori on Dubawi came back across to the rails inside the final two furlongs to throw down his challenge, but Cumani's giant chestnut was always on top and although the Irish 2,000 Guineas winner gave his all, Starcraft was too good and claimed a famous success.

Starcraft was following up his first European Group 1 success in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp earlier in the month.

Lemaire told BBC Racing: "That is my first Group 1 in England - I am so happy and so proud. He was fantastic. He is just a really tough horse.

"I knew it would be difficult to beat Dubawi but he showed today he is an exceptional horse.

"I was a little worried (when the field split) but I didn't panic, I let the horse go his way and I asked him to go on a little bit at the three furlong marker and he responded very well.

"He fought very strongly."

Dettori said: "I was drawn six and Sheikh Mohammed had told me to come to the stands side. I tried to come there but I got behind Mullins Bay and Rakti and I was too far across to get back to the stands rail.

"It is so frustrating, basically I was on the best horse and I got beat. I actually went about 10 yards further than Starcraft.

"I just wish I could ride the race again."

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "It is very unfortunate. Frankie said he got carried out to the middle and could do nothing about it.

"The last thing we had said was that even if Rakti went up the middle, we would definitely stay stands side. But he has still run a huge race and hopefully he will go for the Breeders' Cup Mile."

Cumani keeps options open for Starcraft

LUCA CUMANI was on Monday keeping his options open for Starcraft as he was waiting for the five-year-old to arrive back at Bedford House following his all-the-way win in Sunday's Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.

A tilt at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Newmarket on September 24 is next on the agenda following Sunday's two-and-a-half length success, but Cumani was unsure as to where the former Australian-trained entire would head after that.

"Although he hasn't arrived back yet, I'm told he's eaten up well and he's fine," Cumani said.

Reports coming out of Australia on Monday morning suggested that Racing Victoria's director of racing Stephen Allanson was keen for Starcarft to return back to Australia for the Cox Plate on October 22 following his exploits in France on the weekend, although Cumani was quick to dismiss that possibility.

"No, he won't go to the Cox Plate," Cumani said. "The plan is to go for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes next and although we have options after that, we will wait until after the QE II before deciding where to go. The Champion Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Mile are options but it can't be both."

Starcraft grabs Moulin glory

LUCA CUMANI always knew that Starcraft was a class act and on Sunday the Australian import proved him right by achieving his first European Group 1 race success when trouncing eight rivals in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.

Christophe Lemaire gave the powerful five-year-old an intelligent ride in the Netjets-sponsored race. Immediately realising that the race could become farcically slow-paced, he took Starcraft to the head of affairs and there the pair remained until the end of the mile.

Injecting pace early in the straight, Lemaire soon had the others struggling in his wake and the Paul Makin-owned Starcraft won by two and a half lengths from the fast-finishing Gorella who just got the better of Majors Cast in the last 50 yards.

Christophe Soumillon gave the odds-on favourite Valixir every chance but he lacked his normal sparkle and ended up fifth, just behind his his old rival Whipper.

The winner's time of 1 minute 36.1 secs was the third ever fastest for the Moulin de Longchamp and the son of Soviet Star was bringing his career record to 10 wins from 20 races.

Cumani said: "I'm a bit of a slow learner as I've had Starcraft since February but it's taken time to get to know the horse.

"He had no choice but to make the running and we let him express himself. The horse has a lovely powerful stride and was very impressive. I knew he had it in him to win the Moulin.

"We will now be looking at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and also the Champion Stakes and the Breeders Cup. Today he did it beautifully and it's a great credit to all the team who have helped with his paddock schooling. I was always confident in his ability."

Lemaire had been associated with another brilliant miler this season in the shape of Divine Proportions and said: "Mr Cumani let me decide how to ride Starcraft in the race.

"He relaxed well after the start, was always running and breathing well. He is an incredibly powerful and an impressive individual to ride. They don't come much tougher than him."

As usual Gorella arrived late on the scene and the filly ran well up to expectations. Trainer Jean de Roualle said: "I was very very happy with the filly and she must now be the best of her generation in Europe over a mile.

"We must see how she recovers after this race and her career is now likely to continue in America where we could go to Keeneland for the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, the Matriarch Stakes or the Breeders Cup."

Darryll Holland conjured a great run out of the Jeremy Noseda-trained Majors Cast: "He has now proved himself in Group 1 company and with the best and the trainer has done a great job in stepping him up all the time. If there'd been a stronger pace we might have finished second."

Noseda added: "We have no complaints and I'm absolutely delighted with his race although we could have done with a stronger pace. He will now take his chance in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket."

Whipper raced just behind the leaders but could not quicken in his normal way. Trainer Robert Collet said: "The ground might have just been a little too fast for him today. We're now going for the Breeders Cup Mile."

Valixir's owner The Aga Khan said: "He had a harder race at Deauville than we thought. He was finishing better than anybody and we now need to think about his future."

13/08/05 KINGS DRAMA RUNS IN THE SWORD DANCER INVITATIONAL S. (G1), AMERICA

KING'S DRAMA (Ire) (King's Theatre [Ire]) will also be going for Frankel in this spot and is the likely pacesetter. The bay gelding has earned nothing but triple-digit Speed ratings since coming to the United States and scored an easy six-length optional-claimer win in his last one. King's Drama could be impossible to run down if he gets away with an uncontested lead here. Jorge Chavez has the call. SILVERFOOT (With Approval) was a close second in the United Nations in his most recent race after taking his other two 2005 starts, an allowance and defending his title in the Louisville H. (G3). The gray five-year-old owns the numbers to challenge here so consider for the exotics.

Starcraft set for high level action

STARCRAFT, the Australian star whose new life in Britain suffered a reverse when he returned injured from the Coral-Eclipse Stakes, is set to return to action at the highest level in the Prix du Moulin.

Owner Paul Makin sent the former Australian Derby hero to Luca Cumani in pursuit of a value-enhancing European Group 1 victory, and the horse signalled better things to come when chasing home Valixir and Rakti on his British debut in the Queen Anne Stakes.

However, that promise was not fulfilled when the five-year-old finished sixth of seven in the Eclipse, after which he was diagnosed with a stress fracture of the pelvis, an injury vets believe was responsible for his Sandown flop.

Now fully recovered, Starcraft has begun his build-up to the Longchamp Group 1, much to the delight of Cumani, who said: "Starcraft is stepping up in his exercise and we’re preparing him for the Moulin.

"He’s made very good progress, and we hope he won't have any more setbacks. The plan at this stage is for the horse to run at Longchamp before going for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and then the Champion Stakes."

While Makin had suggested earlier in the year that Starcraft would be retired if winning a Group 1 in Europe, Cumani stressed that no decision has yet been made. He added: "That will be up to the owner and has not been discussed. You can't put the cart before the horse."
