Jim Bolger broke Aidan O'Brians recent monopoly on this event, saddling the very promising Democratic Deficit to beat the previously unbeaten odds-on favourite on merit. In a race which the early tempo looked less than searching, he was well placed half-way and quickened up well despite edging slightly to the left when delivering his challenge over a furlong out. That was one of two incidents that prompted the stewards to take a look, but there was never any question of him losing the race after he buckled down well to hold the runner-up with a degree of comfort through the last half-furlong.
The pick of the paddock Democratic Deficit has clearly progressed well since his debut victory in an auction maiden at Leopardstown and looks a leading candidate for further honours later in the season.
