ANALYSIS: A weak juvenile, run at a modest pace to halfway. ETOILE RUSSE, who had been running over 7f and 1m on the Flat, was very free on his hurdling debut and Tony McCoy would have been happy to get a lead, but with nothing keen to go on he had to make the best of it and he managed to get control of the gelding by halfway. That ensured that he got the trip without a problem, but his jumping lacked fluency and he will need to sharpen up if he is to build on the promise of this first effort.

Backstreet Lad's hurdling also left something to be desired and he was struggling to stay with the pace from four out. However, he did run on through beaten horses for a fair second and stamina is evidently not going to be a problem for this maiden plater from the Flat.

Verstone, keen on her Cartmel debut when third of 12, again failed to settle here and, after tracking the leader closely throughout, she weakened from the second last.
