ANALYSIS: A decent race, featuring a blend of proven Group horses and others who have made their way up through the handicap ranks. Plenty of them were in form, none more so than ENFORCER, who has been on the go since the Lincoln meeting and has never stopped improving. Rated only 80 at the start of the season, he had gained his third handicap win off a mark of 94 and on his latest start had only just been touched off in a Listed race. In a race in which they raced in two similarly sized groups, with Hazyview isolated wider up the centre, the winner was in the stands'-side group and had the advantage of the rail to race against when it came down to a battle with Mullins Bay. There was talk afterwards of races like the Coral-Eclipse for the winner next year, and while that sounds too ambitious it's worth bearing in mind he has improved more than 20lb this year and is a real trier. Mullins Bay is another who is much improved this year, and he was back at a more appropriate level after taking on Starcraft and Dubawi in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He might have won except for hanging badly right. St Andrews tracked Into The Dark up the stands' rail and had nowhere to go approaching the furlong marker. He ran on, but the damage was done. Into The Dark, back at what looks a more suitable trip, had his own way up the stands' rail and had no excuse. Democratic Deficit ran well in two Guineas in the spring but he hasn't won since the Craven Stakes and looked a difficult ride, hanging both ways. With several others in the race who like to make the running, Hazyview was taken wide to race alone, where he led overall until coming under pressure and hanging left to join the centre group in the last couple of furlongs. The straight track would not have played to his strengths in such a big field. The same can be said of Eccentric, another front-runner, who has excelled on turning tracks. His rider made no attempt to lead this time. That pair were split by Helm Bank, who was held up at the back of the field and ran on too late to land a blow. The first eight finished a long way clear of the rest. *Darryll Holland reported that Hazyview hung left. *Jimmy Fortune reported that Admiral's Cruise lost his action. *Ryan Moore reported that Bahar Shumaal lost his action. |
