The field fanned out but raced to their draw with the lowest numbers staying stands'side. As the winner was entitled to win with the authority she did any draw effect remains debatable.

There was plenty of Group and Listed form in a stronger than usual race of this sort, although last year's race boasted the Lowther winner Flashy Wings, who could not quite concede the weight to Expensive.

INDIAN INK's second in the Lowther earned her the only three-figure rating in this field and her class carried her through despite reservations about this unusual trip after the way she was picked up at York after looking all over the winner. She was allowed to bowl along, just off the strong pace, before cruising ahead and winning impressively. Connections have not ruled out a return to the top table for the Cheveley Park next Friday and, while she is among the top juvenile fillies of her generation, bookmakers were doing no favours in quoting a general 40-1 about the chances in the 1,000 Guineas as connections feared this trip could stretch her so the daunting Newmarket mile early in May must be out of bounds.

The placed maidens have enjoyed good paydays but may live to regret taking on a classy rival as far as handicap marks go, although Siamese Cat should have no trouble winning her maiden after stepping up dramatically on her debut effort a week ago, confirmed by beating her conqueror Pretty Majestic. A change of tactics looked to suit, although they may have been forced on her as she took a bumpout of the stalls and was still disputing last past halfway. While others found conditions too testing, she galloped on strongly to show she will improve again for a step up in trip in time, and she has plenty of scope for improvement and she had a hopeless task trying to give the Group-race performer 3lb.

Diamond Diva, another Newbury debutante a week ago, should have little trouble winning her maiden, although many will put a question mark over her temperament as she veered badly left and started pulling herself up inside the final furlong when held but on the heels of the runner-up. The obvious explanation is that this green youngster saw the walkway where she had come onto the course and was making for a quick exit. She impressed as one of the few still travelling strongly into the second half of the race and while getting a handy weight advantage she should win her share of races.

Whazzis did best of those drawn low and confirmed the promise of her debut. The problem is that she has finished a place ahead of an 80-rated rival and a Listed placed filly but she is another whose style suggests she can find improvement when stepping up in trip.

Baltic Belle looks to have run her race under a change of tactics, staying on late without threatening to land a blow. A repeat of the tactics can bring an overdue maiden win.

Naughty Thoughts was always being dragged along a yard too quick for her liking but she was responding gamely to strong driving when slightly short of room asWhazzis wandered in her path. She kept on again after and looks another who will improve over further, a belief backed by her breeding.

Russian Rosie has not run to her rating, suggesting she has been overrated by the handicapper, but her form on a sounder surface looks strong enough and she was probably not helped by the rain-soaked ground.

Riverside Dancer was doing good late work in her cheekpieces but is another who has not performed to her official mark, a remark that also applies to Pretty Majestic, who had no excuses after moving up menacingly into the final 2f before weakening disappointingly having finished strongly last time.

Suki Bear ran a shade better than the bare form as she made a promising move widest out midtrack before weakening on unfavourable ground. She was allowed to come home in her own time.

The first division of the juvenile fillies' maiden looked a reasonable contest and produced an easy winner in RUSSIAN ROSIE, who has progressed steadily from her debut on this track last month and was always travelling well. She drew away in good style and looks capable of going on to better things.
